The best way to stay on a diet on vacation (or the holidays)

My patients often ask me what is the best way to stay on a diet while on vacation. Is this a serious question?! I recommend no strict diet while on vacation. Sample all the local specialties and try out some new foods. I’m always on a quest while on vacation in search of the best mai-tai, espresso, burger, taco, salad, BBQ or whatever. I also recommend to only eat delicious things. If it’s not that good, don’t eat it. It’s not worth the calories for bad food. Don’t even think about being on a diet on vacation. Explore, have fun and get back to reasonable eating once you return home. Same for the holidays. Enjoy your special foods on Thanksgiving but get back on the wagon the following day.
