Mounjaro: A Research-Backed Tool To Help You On Your Weight Loss Journey

Mounjaro is the newest viral weight loss medication with its cousin, Ozempic. There is a ton of information and thought pieces out about this medication and how it relates to diet culture, but there are very few straightforward articles on what it actually is and how it works.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the new and improved version of tirzepatide, similar to semaglutide which is the active ingredient in older weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. It is also the medication I am prescribing patients to help them reach their goals. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide which is regarded as the most effective medication for weight loss.

Tirzepatide is currently approved for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and is on track for approval for weight loss in 2023. It is currently prescribed off-label for weight loss.

The numbers speak for themselves, with overweight and obese patients taking tirzepatide losing up to 20% of their weight. To put that in perspective, a person who weighs 200lbs can expect to lose 40lbs.

There are additional benefits to using tirzepatide including a decreased risk for diabetes (hemoglobin A1c) and improved cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

The way Mounjaro works is actually quite simple. It interacts with two receptors in the body which help to control blood sugar and to slow down digestion. The delay in digestion makes you feel fuller faster and longer, effectively reducing your appetite overall.

Managing Risks and Side Effects

As with any medication, you should make sure that ttirzepatide is right for you.

You should not take Mounjaro if you are at risk for thyroid cancer or have a family history of thyroid cancer, have had pancreatitis, kidney failure, Type 1 Diabetes, have an allergy to the medication, or are pregnant or nursing.

Some side effects to Mounjaro have been reported including stomach upset, diarrhea, or constipation. Side effects are worse the first day starting the medication or when increasing the dose.

Tirzepatide is slowing down your gut so manage constipation early.

You should stop using the medication if you experience severe vomiting and diarrhea which cause dehydration and kidney failure. Similarly, severe abdominal pain that does not go away and may wrap around to your back can indicate pancreatitis and you should immediately stop the medication.

Alert me or your other primary medical professional if you develop symptoms of severe side effects right away.

Most people tolerate tirzepatide very well and maintain their weight loss over time with the appropriate diet and lifestyle changes. Always remember that medication is a tool to help you develop amazing habits that will support your health for life!
