All or nothing never lasts, but balance wins the race

Let’s talk New Year’s resolutions!

We all make them, and truth be told, only sometimes do we keep them. One of the most common reasons we burn out on our goals is because we launch into them too quickly, and without a plan.

Instead of setting huge long-term goals, see if you can break it down into more manageable chunks. For example, instead of setting a goal to lose 100 pounds in 2023, can you commit to exercising 5x a week for 30 minutes? How about having a leafy green salad with dinner each night?

Our brains can become overwhelmed by these huge goals. Studies have shown that smaller, achievable goals help us to create longevity by giving us a sense of accomplishment as we progress through our health journeys.

That being said, it’s equally important to start at the pace and intensity that your unique body can handle.

If you haven’t exercised in a year, diving into a weightlifting routine could even cause injury without proper training and technique. Build up to these goals instead by starting low and slow and aiming instead for consistency.

When setting your goals, try these simple tricks to help you stay on track:

  • Write down your goals and keep them in a place where you will see them often.

  • Break your goal into manageable chunks that you can achieve within a few weeks to a few months.

  • Add more healthy options to your diet rather than taking foods out. By filling up on salad before dinner, you will naturally eat less of the bad stuff.

  • Focus on technique. Build up to higher weight or intensity by first mastering the proper form and technique.

  • Get an accountability buddy! Do you have a friend or family member with similar goals? Set up a weekly check in to keep on track.
