How New Father, Nathan, Lost 78lbs With Semaglutide And Gained Energy For His Family
This week on the blog, we are featuring a 2022 success story. Nathan Cooper tells us why he lost 78lbs for the good of his family:
I'm a 5' 10" , 34 yr old male who has always been the "fat kid." I grew up overweight. I had two back surgeries while still in high school and a third in college. While the back damage was genetic, the fact that I weighed well over 250lbs my senior year of high school didn't help.
After six years of college, a bachelor's degree in science, and master's degree in education, I had reached a high of 295lbs. Grabbing fast food between honors classes was quick and easy and I wasn't making smart choices.
I was exhausted, unable to function, basic life was hard. Diet and exercise got me down to 260lbs but not any lower. In 2013 I had a sleeve gastrectomy surgery and that got my weight down to 185lbs over the following eight months but by 2015 it was slowly creeping back.
I met my wife in 2016 and we were married in 2018 at 220lbs. In January 2021 during the pandemic, our first child was born and I was 240lbs.
Life was exhausting with sleepless nights and busy work days. As a teacher I was teaching virtually from an empty classroom for a year. The lack of human interaction was depressing and food was an easy comfort.
Following the pandemic, work improved but life quickly became busier, leading to more unhealthy eating. In March of 2022 our second child was born.
I was 265lbs and I knew I had to make a change. If I wanted to be the dad these kids deserved, I needed to make serious changes.
In April of 2022, my nurse practitioner recommended I try Semaglutide and I took her up on the offer. I had no idea where this would go but I was willing to dedicate myself to making it happen and I was hopeful that this medication could aid my journey.
The injections were easy and the side effects were nonexistent for me. I followed my dosing schedule and I counted calories.
I quickly learned that the medication doesn't cause weight loss. It aids in you eating less and that calorie deficit fuels the weight loss. A good part of this journey is learning to watch your calorie intake daily.
By July 2022 I was down 30lbs and very excited. My nurse practitioner recommended switching to Mounjaro and I took her up on the offer again. I have not had any side effects outside of mild heartburn which is primarily when I eat something overly acidic like pasta sauce or when I eat too large of a portion.
Fast forward to Jan 2023 and I am now at 187lbs. That’s 78lbs lost since April).
Not only have I lost a lot of weight but my lifestyle is sustainable.
I make healthier meal choices. I pick a burger without a bun and a side salad instead of the double cheeseburger and onion rings. My awareness of the food I'm consuming makes me confident that as I continue to lose weight, I will be able to sustain it at a low dose of medicine or even no medication.
This process takes time but that time enabled me to educate myself and choose to be a better me for myself and my family.
